Men sentenced for damaging building

PA Auckland Two young men have been given probationary and corrective sentences in the High Court at Auckland on a charge of wilfully damaging a Pakuranga building by detonating a home-made bomb. Peter Graham Russell, aged 19, a storeman, of Otahuhu, and Simon Phillip Auliff, aged 19, an unemployed beneficiary, of Auckland, appeared before Mr Justice Barker. They had earlier pleaded guilty in the District Court at Otahuhu to a charge of damaging the Retail Traders Society building at Pakuranga on November 7. His Honour said the offence was premeditated, “if not naive.” The District Court had been told that the young

men had used the contents of numerous fireworks to make a bomb. Property damage to the building had been considerable. Auliff was sentenced to six months periodic detention, put on probation for 18 months, and ordered to pay $799 in compensation. Russell was sentenced to corrective training, to be followed by a year’s probation.
