Sunshine above average
Warm weather in the last week of February boosted Christchurch's sunshine hours to 13 more than the average for the month. A total of 199 sunshine hours was recorded by the Meteorological Office, with the highest maximum temperature of 29.6 deg on February 26. This contrasted markedly with the first three weeks in February when temperatures were well below average at times. On February 20 the minimum temperature at Christchurch Airport of 3.ldeg. was within half a degree of the extreme minimum recorded on February 12, 1980. February rainfall in Christchurch at 37mm was smm below the average although at Christchurch Airport it was 60mm, 15mm above the average.
