Drinks in hospital
Sir,—l agree with the sentiments expressed by Dennis Wilkinson and G. H. Boston about the destructive force of alcohol, but submit a ban should not be imposed on the advertising of alcohol. The ban should be on all alcoholic beverages. Are these writers aware that alcoholic drinks are offered several times a day to patients recovering from surgery in the Southern Cross Hospital? A protest was sent to the principals of Southern Cross and their reply was that the patients had a personal choice and that alcohol would not retard the process of recovery; As C. H. Boston points out, alcohol causes cirrhosis and brain damage which starts with the destruction of the first brain cell with the first drink. The attitude of the hospital authorities is totally irresponsible. — Yours, etc., M. A. HOGAN. February 19, 1984.
[Mrs Lois L. Kritos, Principal Nurse at the Southern Cross Trust Hospital, comments: “Many hospitals, here and overseas, offer a choice of wines with certain meals, under medical supervision. At the
Southern Cross Trust Hospital wine is offered, along with fruit and vegetable juice, etc., with luncheon. It is a matter of personal choice.”]
