Parking tickets

Sir, — At 1.30 p.m. today I was looking at the beautiful floral displays provided by the Christchurch Beautifying Association on the Avon River bank opposite Noahs Hotel. Also appreciating the fine floral arrangements were members of the Crippled Children Society, in wheelchairs, leg braces and on crutches. Two vans belonging to the society were parked at the curb nearby. They were clearly marked with the handicap signs of the society. A meter maid from the Christchurch City Council came along and issued a parking ticket to each vehicle. A group of American tourists, also enjoying the floral show were just as amazed as I was at this act of bureaucracy. So much for all the fine efforts of the Canterbury Promotion Council. — Yours, etc.,

CLEMENT TOHILL. February 29, 1984.
