Port sewerage site mooted
Preliminary investigations by the Lyttelton' Borough Council regarding the possible siting of a sewage-treatment plant at Battery Point was approved at a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s works committee yesterday. The council asked the
board to make available an area of land at Battery Point for the possible siting of a sewerage plant to treat the borough’s waste. The board’s chief engineer, Mr J. B. Bushell, said that earlier discussions with the council had involved the requirement of a large area
of land which was not available at the site. The council was now considering a “package type” sewagetreatment plant to be sited east of the incinerator at the point, he said. Land was available for the smaller plant and the
area was not suitable for development by the board, Mr Bushell said. The committee recommended to agree in principle to site investigations beginning. The, borough engineer, Mr J. Christensen, said previous proposals relating to works at Gollans Bay were now unrealistic because of the terrain and the expected cost of siting a plant there. Mr Christensen said the plant being considered by the council would be compact, almost enclosed, and would be compatible with the surrounding environment It would cover about 1000 square metres. The council has been considering building a sewerage plut for many years. It completed removing three outfalls in the inner harbour ud one at Corsair Bay two years ago. All borough sewage is now discharged raw through an outfall east of the Cashin Quay breakwater.
