Two qualify for series

By

JEFF SCOTT

Good to Win and Daphne Mist became eligible for the semi-finals of the $lOO,OOO Sires’ Stakes Series for two-year-olds when they won their respective qualifying heats at the Addington trials yesterday.

The first of the semifinals is to be run by the New Brighton Trotting’ Club on March 21, while the final will be run at Alexandra Park on May 26. The Blenheim-trained Good to Win, a good fourth in his race debut at Addington on January 14, was the faster of the two qualifiers, winning his mile heat in 2min 5.45.

Trained by Peter Hope and driven by his son, Greg, Good to Win trailed three back on the inner and it was only a case of gaining an opening for him to assert his superiority and win comfortably by a length. A well-grown gelded halfbrother by Out to Win to Lock Rae’ (Imin 595) and Lord Kevello, Good to Win is the fourth foal of his dam, Louginbee, which was swept away during the Marlborough floods last July, with a Lordship foal at foot. Luckily, both were rescued without injury.

The leaders ran their closing 800 m in Imin 2.6 s and the final 400 m in 30.45.

The pacemaker, Risdon Boy, from Washdyke, was gallant in defeat, with a neck to the Reg Curtintrained stablemates, Ingrid Bromac and Boyden Sun. Daphne Mist, ninth in her debut at Addington on February 21, came strongly from three back on the inner to shade Westburn King by a neck in the second heat, won in 2min 7.75.

A half-sister by Waratah to Bill Jamieson’s former smart mare, Twilight Mist, Daphne Mist is also trained by Jamieson and looks capable of developing useful form.

Westbum King, the first foal of the former speedy mare, Westburn Vue (Imin 58s), finished well after settling in midfield. By Out to Win, this youngster is prepared at Brookside by Barry Hamilton.

Loch Out, a son of Scottish Hanover and the first foal of another fine racemare in In or Out (Imin 59.75), also ran on well for third, four lengths away. He is trained at Templeton by Peter Robertson.
