Risk of war
Sir,—With respect to Mr McLay, could not one reverse all the statements of February 25, as to which is cause and which is effect? If, motivated by fear and power a big strong rich boy faces up to a frightened heavyweight bully, and a “small fry” moves to stand alongside the big boy for “protection,” the small one is automatically in the fight, with all that entails; whereas if he had stood aside, unafraid, unnoticed, almost unknown with no reason to be involved he would at least have been free to exert a peaceful, conciliatory influence
on the power-fear-aggression-preoccupied big boys, according to his ability and wish to influence the trend of affairs. Is it really the 3Va million New Zealanders who feel threatened by the millions of Russians, and cry to the millions of Americans for a handout of protection? Is not it just a game the leaders are playing, without anyone else’s approval?—Yours, etc., N. W. MILANOVICH. February 27, 1984.
