Sir David ‘is 15’ today
PA Auckland The Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, who celebrates his fifteenth birthday today, joked yesterday that he would now be eligible for the child benefit and superannuation. Sir David, free of official engagements today, said he did not know how the day would be marked, although he suspected "some scheming” at Government House in Auckland. Five of Sir David and Lady Beattie’s children travelled to Auckland for the occasion. Sir David, who said he thought he was the first Governor-General of New Zealand to have a leap-year birthday, will be 60 today. “With superannuation, the child benefit, and a war pension, things are looking up,” he said. Sir David said be had never felt deprived by having a real birthday only every four years. March 1, when he celebrates his birthday other years, is the Beatties' wedding anniversary, and so there are festivities on that date. The couple were married 34 years ago, not in a leap year. Several persons born on February 29 have sent telegrams of congratulation to Sir David. He returned the birthday wishes.
