Illa Marie shows fitness for Wellington
Special correspondent Palmerston North Illa Marie worked smartly at Woodville yesterday morning in preparation for the Wellington meeting on Saturday. Others from the centre to please in their semi-final trials included Both Barrels, Compromise, and Gossip. Most fast work took place on the plough, which was in good order. Illa Marie arid Sound Lady showed dash when they ran 1000 m in Imin 1.55, the last 600 m in 37.25, Illa Marie was a good third when resuming at the local meeting and will not be disgraced in the Plunket Nursery at Trentham. Both Barrels and Ego ran from the 1200 m in Imin 10.3 s the last 600 m in. 38.55. Both Barrels was just beaten at the local meeting and will be an interesting runner over 2000 m in the Maidstone Handicap at
Trentham. Ego is in the Ngaio Highweight. Cuspidor and Latin Affair ran the last 1200 m of their work in Imin 23.1 s and were not pushed over the final 600 m in 40s. Cuspidor is ready to race well in the Maidstone Handicap, in which Woodville holds a strong hand. Suttle Knight clocked Imin 17.8 s for 1200 m, the 600 m in 38.95. He is an acceptor for the U.D.C. Handicap at Trentham, but John Harris will also pay up for the IZB Allrounder on Saturday at Avondale. A maiden galloper, Wattson, started some five lengths behind gossip at the 1200 m, and the gap was about 10 lengths at the finish. Wattson clocked Imin 18s, the last 600 m in 39.15, so Gossip’s time was smart. Gossip is a lightweight in the 2ZB Golden Mile, but his trainer, Scott Hammersley, will make up his mind
about a start later in the week. Beautrix showed speed when he ran 1000 m in Imin 0.95. High Fibre and Esprit D’Or went 800 m in 525. Forger and a Retained II gelding recorded Imin 3.6 s for 1000 m. Compromise, fresh from his Matamata success, collected Carpentier to run his last 1200 m in Imin 18.25, the 600 m in 39.75. Compromise is in the U.D.C. Handicap on Saturday, while Carpentier is an acceptor for the Marton meeting. Jean Darling and Creuset went 800 m, taking 39.4 s for the last 600 m. Vin D’Amour ran 800 m, and was timed from the 600 m in 38.25. She appears to have come through her Matamata Breeders’ Stakes win well. Frontal Belle and Rumbaba ran 600 m in 38.85. Regal Desire went 1000 m in Imin 4.45, the 600 m in 37.5 s on the inside grass.
