J. J. BOYLE
A Saturday race day has become a rare event in Canterbury each autumn, but this year there will be a change, one tbat will be welcomed by those who are denied opportunities to go racing on week days.
The chance to go racing on a Saturday this year stems from the financial woes of the Nelson Jockey Club, and that club’s surrender of two of its three permits allocated for the present season. One of those
permits has been granted to the North Canterbury Racing Club, which will use it on Saturday, April 7, and will stage its normal autumn meeting at Rangiora nine days later. Canterbury’s heavy programme of autumn weekday galloping meetings will start with Geraldine next Tuesday. Ashburton will race on the Monday of the following week. Then the circuit shifts briefly to Otago for the Oarnaru Jockey Club’s meeting on Monday, March
zo. The Waimate Racing Club this season moved off a January date in favour of a week-day autumn event, this year on Monday, April 6. The North Canterbury Racing Club will stage a programme of 10 races worth a combined total of $25,700 for its “substitute” meeting on April 7. The main races will be the $4500 Amalgamated Packaging Handicap (about 2000 m) and the $3500 Ashley Meats Handicap (1200 m
