Pawky top Tauranga prospect

Special correspondent Auckland It would be appropriate if, as seems likely, Pawky, El Questro, and Crawford’s Boy paid the dividends in Tauranga’s big race today, the Tony Williams Benefit Handicap. All three are Bay of Plenty horses. They are in promising form, and Crawford’s Boy, in particular, has shown a decided liking for the Tauranga track. Crawford’s Boy claims a last-start win, in a class two 2000 m at Gisborne on February 18. El Questro shared first place with Passion’s Pride over 3200 m at Te Rapa on February 14 (afterwards relegated to second for causing interference) and Pawky gave a further sign of being on the way back to winning form when fifth behind compromise over 2030 m at Matamata on February 18.

Two starts before Matamata, Pawky managed a third placing behind Olene and Rushcutter over 2200 m at Ellerslie on February 4. This is about the time of the year when he seems to arrive at his best form.

Pawky and Crawford’s Boy both do their fast gallops at Te Teko. Crawford’s Boy, all told, has won four races at Tauranga, the latest one, some 14 months ago, through the judge’s placings being overturned after an inquiry into interference.

Pawky finished first, in the 2100 m Air New Zealand Handicap, by a nose from Crawford’s Boy, but the judicial committee reversed the placings, alleging interference by Pawky to the other horse.

El Questro, now eight years old, was one of the leading stayers two years or more back. His form fell away for a time but has looked better lately. In the Te Rapa race El Questro might well have won outright except for lugging in, briefly, towards the finish. Two starts previously he ran on solidly when third over 2200 m at Avondale on January 28. If El Questro wins he will put his trainer, Del Roberts, in line for the double. Roberts will run Nazman

in the second leg, the Tauranga Handicap, and the five-year-old, with the withdrawal of Glenside and Romantic Bay, looks a top prospect. Nazman failed last time, over 1400 m at Avondale on January 28, but was from the outside of 13 at the start and against -Mac’s Gamble in record-breaking form. Nazman was a winner the previous time, in a class two 1400 m at Tauranga, on December 30. That was his first race since the end of the winter.
