Aust. trading quiet, firm
NZPA Sydney Prices firmed in quiet trading on Australian stock exchanges, with gold stocks highlighted after the rise in the physical gold price. Brokers said rising domestic interest rates distracted investors who had been expected to enter the market after the strong rise by the New York Stock Exchange. The all ordinaries index was up 1.9 at 747.7, with the all industrials on 2.0 at 981.6 and the all resources up 1.8 at 562.0. Central Norseman jumped 30c to 660, Whim Creek at 425 and Poseidon at 480 were up 20c, GMK added 15c to 1050 while 10c rises took Emperor to 400 and Peko 570. BHP added 25c in Sydney to 1360. Metals were narrowly mixed, with CRA off 2c at 552 ahead of results, WMC at 415 and Bougainville 256 added 3c,
while MIM at 352 and North Broken Hill at 288 were steady.
