LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS Where does it come from and what is LPG? LPG is a New Zealand indigenous fuel and comes from our gas fields Maui and Kapuni. Unlike most of our petrol and diesel fuels, LPG is an AUTOMOTIVE fuel which does not use expensive overseas oil imports and therefore saves overseas funds. LPG is primarily a mixture of two gases PROPANE and BUTANE. These gases when contained under a moderate pressure, will form a liquid which when released will turn back into its original gaseous form. This has the advantage of giving a vehicle long range for any given cylinder size as the fuel is a liquid in your cylinder.
