Hellemans takes biathlon
John Hellemans, from Christchurch, a well known triathlete, won the Wilson Neill Christchurch biathlon yester-
day. Hellemans was a comfortable winner, finishing almost two minutes ahead of Peter Laing (Otago) and the former Commonwealth Games butterfly gold medallist, Dave Gerrard (Otago). The biathlon comprised a skm run which started at the Waimairi Surf Club, moved down Beach Road, around the streets of Parklands, and back to Waimairi Beach. Contestants then had an 800 m swim in a flat sea to complete the event. There were 16 entries and 15
of them finished. A number of entries came from Otago athletes who had swum at the South Island Masters swimming championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday evening. Hellemans, who led by more than two minutes at the end of the run, finished in 29min 12s. The first woman home was Virginia Le Bas (Christchurch), in a creditable 36min 255. She was eleventh overall. Results were: Men: Hellemans, 29:12, 1; Laing, 31:16, 2; Gerrard, 31:39, 3; David Baars (Christchurch), 34:15 (first junior home), 4. Women: Le Bas, 36:25, 1; C. McKenzie (Otago), 40:43, 2; J. Mitchell (Otago), 45:23, 3.
