Car warrants of fitness
Sir,—Art Freebairn should check his facts. In Australia, one cannot register or re-register a motor vehicle until a fitness certificate is obtained, which is annually. The inspection by garages there is laughable, consequently many unsafe vehicles are in use, with drastic results. Our system, though not perfect, is excellent. — Yours, etc.,

Sir,—Recent letters about warrants of fitness need rebuttal. In Christchurch alone hundreds of vehicles are rejected annually because of faulty steering and suspension joints; usually the owners have no idea of the wear that has taken place, neglected to service them, or worse by far, attempted to weld or crush the joints in an effort to obtain a warrant. These faults are routinely picked up by warrant testing establishments. The need not to dwell on this hazard is,. selfexplanatory. Should Mr Fairbairn wish to see evidence of this type of
linkage failure, we have hundreds of examples for inspection. — Yours, etc.,
