Shipping news

Cargo tonnage handled through the port of Lyttelton for the first three months of the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s 1983-84 financial year is up 25 per cent on the corresponding period last year. The total tonnage handled from October to the end of December, 1983, amounted to 578,200 tonnes, the board’s trade and commercial development committee heard this week. This was up more than 117,600 tonnes on the figure for the previous year, said the general manager, Mr lan Brokenshire.

New Zealand coastal tonnage had shown a big increase, but the volume of overseas cargo was down, he said. The trade which has shown the biggest rise is the roll-on link between Lyttelton and Wellington, with an increase of almost 113,000 tonnes on the previous year’s figure. Mr Brokenshire said that the increased coastal trade volumes reflected the success of Pacifica Shipping’s interisland freight ferry service. The Shipping Corporation’s Auckland-Lyttelton-Dunedin link, sailed by the Coastal Trader, had also contributed. Those classes of cargo which have shown the biggest increase in tonnage compared with the previous year include general cargo, motor-vehicles, and containers. The amount of general cargo was up about 55,700 tonnes, while motorvehicle tonnage was up more than 49,600 tonnes. ARRIVALS
