McMurdo plan features green
A Christchurch decorating consultant, Mr Noel Gillespie, has just returned from Antarctica where he has been working on plans to refurbish the Americans’ buildings at McMurdo Station in high-fashion style.
Green will be the predominant colour of the new decor in both the officers’ and enlisted men’s messes at McMurdo Station in order to give a homelier feel to the barren, all-white surroundings. New Zealand Axminster carpets of green hues will be. used, and there will be plenty of pot plants and potted palms. “Both the climbing and free-standing varieties have been planned, giving as much greenery and Floridatype atmosphere as possible,” said Mr Gilles-
pie. All walls will be lined with Gib-foil and covered with wallpaper and grassweave. New suspension ceilings to be installed will have numerous recessed lights. All-New Zealand timbers will be used for new wall panelling and door facings. In fact, all the materials used will be of New Zealand origin. Paintings will be hung to complete the effect, mainly of New Zealand and American landscapes, as well as a few colourful modern paintings. These will be highlighted with ceiling spot-lights.
Materials for the renovation will be flown to McMurdo Station on the last flight of the season in midFebruary.
