Rabbits attack renewed

Quail Island rabbits have lived up to their breeding reputation, forcing the Lands and Survey Department to launch a second poisoning campaign on the island.

The rabbit research group of the Ministry of Agriculture has offered to help this time with the laying of a new anti-coagulant poison, Brodifacoun pellets. A Lands and Survey officer in Christchurch, Mr David Forrester, said that the four-week programme would start on Tuesday but Quail Island would not have to be closed to the public. A big poisoning campaign last year with 1080 poison was meant to have killed about 95 per cent of the rabbit population. “Now rabbits are just everywhere again,” he said. “They are making a terrible mess of our revegetation programme there.” The Health Department had advised that the island could stay open provided that warning signs were posted and the pellets handlaid in places away from the normal walking and picnicking spots.
