Test more important than wedding
PA Palmerston North Nicky Fuller became a cricket widow yesterday — four days before she was due to be married.
Miss Fuller and Wellington’s fast bowler from Sussex, Tony Pigott, were planning on getting married on Monday but England’s cricket team manager, Alan Smith, staked a more pressing claim yesterday. Pigott was called by Mr Smith at the start of the lunch adjournment in yesterday’s Central DistrictsWellington Shell Trophy match and invited to join the England squad for the
second test
Pigott thought the call was a prank for a start.
“Even when I heard Smith’s voice I wasn’t sure, but I was certainly happily surprised when I was assured it was him,” he said. Pigott, despite a poor return in the present match (only one wicket), is happy with his fitness and form.
The call-up is for only one game at this stage.
“I’ll have to see if I can do something about that,” Pigott joked. And the wedding date? “We’ll just have to think about that.”
