Notice of cleaners’ action

PA Auckland Cleaners at Auckland Hospital who struck for 38' days last year have given their employer, Crothall Industries, Ltd, further notice of industrial action. The cleaners returned to work on December 20 at the direction of an industrial conciliator, Mr G. C. Ditchfield.

His formula for the return entailed the engagement of six extra temporary cleaners, as well as an assessment of the cleaners’ workloads.

An organiser for the Auckland Hotel, Hospital and Restaurant Workers’ Union, Mr Mark Gosche, said yesterday that the cleaners were dissatisfied with the way their workloads had been rescheduled since their return. He said the six extra staff had been placed in positions formerly occupied by permanent cleaners. As a result, some cleaners had had little work since the strike ended.

The 14" days notice of industrial action is due to expire on February 7, but Mr Gosche said he hoped the issue could be resolved before then. The cleaners struck on November 12 because they said unacceptable workloads and staffing levels were lowering hygiene standards at the hospital.
