National to have ballot
NZPA-Reuter London Runners in Britain’s most famous race, the Grand National at Aintree, look certain to face a ballot, for the first time, this year. A record entry of 141 have entered the Aintree race on March 31. New conditions, which say that horses qualify if they have won a ’chase anywhere in the world since 1980-81, is the reason for the huge entry. The previous requirement was for a horse to have won a ’chase valued at £3500 (SNZ7SOO) or more. The new rules also include the cutting of the safety limit on runners from 50 to 40.
