Suburban group matches

The Suburban Senior A cricket competition has been divided into two seeded groups of four and the first in a series of three matches started in fine weather on Saturday. Batting first, Woolston W.M.C. declared at 196 for six against Upper Riccarton with Phil Gruppelaar top scoring with 68. In reply, Upper Riccarton was 66 for one at stumps. Christchurch W.M.C. scored an excellent 230 for six declared against Belfast, John Stephens making 94 and Neil Francis 66. They shared a second-wicket partnership of considerably more than 100. Belfast was in deep trouble at stumps, being 88 for eight. Francis was the main destroyer with four wickets for seven. After dismissing Southern Districts for 154, MerivalePapanui failed to capitalise on its position and was 81 for five at the end of the day. Displaying one of its rare but pleasing performances, Hoon Hay was able to declare at 211 for four after Bruce Day and R. Emmerson had each scored 62. Sumner also batted with ease.
