Disaster fund
A Southland Disaster Relief fund has been set up and donations to the appeal will be accepted at branches of the Bank of New Zealand throughout the country. Donations can also be sent to the Civic Association Building at Invercargill. The fund was announced on Saturday by the Mayor of Invercargill, Mrs Eve Poole. Otago councils plan weeklong appeals beginning today. Emergency supplies of food, toiletries, and clothes
have not yet been needed but the Red Cross Society has supplies available if required, according to its secretary manager in Christchurch, Mr John Mahoney. The National Council of Churches has allocated an initial $lOOO to be sent by its Christian World Service for distribution by its Invercargill branch. The council would standby in case more money was asked for and would accept donations from the public, said the service’s director, the Rev. Brian Turner, of Christchurch.
