‘Times’ suspends another 800
NZPA-AP London “The Times” newspaper has cancelled publication for a third day and suspended 800 more workers in an escalating dispute with unions over managerial duties in the news library. News International, publishers of the 198-year-old daily and its sister weekly, the “Sunday Times,” said the future of both newspapers was in “jeopardy.” Production of the “Sunday Times” was halted after a striking print union failed to respond to management proposals for ending the dispute, said the newspaper’s editor, Andrew Neil. No new negotiations were scheduled, and the company said in a statement that “only an immediate resumption of talks could make possible publication of the ‘The Times’ for Monday morning.” “This is a loss-making company and ‘The Times’ and the ‘Sunday Times’ must now be seen to be in jeopardy,” the statement said.
Mr Neil said that management had ordered the suspension without pay of 800 workers involved in the dispute, bringing to 1550 the number suspended since Thursday.
