New twist in heroin probe
NZPA-Reuter Palermo Italy is considering asking the United States to extradite at least one of seven Italo-Americans arrested last week on charges of running a billion-dollar heroin racket, police sources said yesterday. Magistrates are awaiting detailed official reports on the arrests and charges against the seven men arrested in New York and Philadelphia before deciding their next move, the sources said. One of those detained, Paolo Laporta, told an
undercover drug enforcement agency official that he belonged to a gang which had murdered Rocco Chinnici, the Italian judge who was investigating the heroin trade between the Far East, Sicily and the United States east coast. According to information received by Italian authorities so far, the seven Sicilians, six of whom had dual American and Italian citizenship, received heroin from Sicily which they had sold for more than SUSI billion in the United States.
