Christie’s art expert to visit

By

DIANA DEKKER

in London An art expert from Christie’s in London has been inundated with inquiries about his visit to New Zealand early next month. "I have never been in so much demand,” said Mr Henry Wyndham, an expert on eighteenth and nineteenth century paintings. Christie’s is sending him to New Zealand in the hope that he will be able to unearth valuable pieces of art suitable for sale at the famous London auction rooms. Mr Wyndham said that he had been "really very busy with a lot of mail from New Zealand” about the visit. Many of the letters had contained photographs but he would have to look at the

items to evaluate them properly. "The proof of the pudding will be when I get there," he said. Mr Wyndham was the Christie’s employee who recognised a Gainsborough painting from a photograph from New Zealand last year. The painting subsequently’ sold in April for $308,000.’ Mr Wyndham will be in Auckland at the Sheraton Hotel from February 4 to 7, in Hamilton at Debrett's Glenview Hotel from February 7 to 8, in Wellington at the Park Royal Hotel from February 9 to 17, in Christchurch at Noah’s Hotel from February 12 to 15 and from February 17 to 18. and in Dunedin at the Southern Cross Hotel on February 25.
