Chch blitz stops many drivers
Christchurch drivers appear to be returning to old habits after many offenders were stopped in a drinkdriving blitz in the city during the week-end. Senior Traffic Sergeant R. J. Gilshnan said that the high number of drivers apprehended was not very encouraging. In the first big campaign since Operation Checkpoint, traffic officers took 36 breath-screening tests on Friday and Saturday evening, 34 evidential breathscreening tests, 14 blood samples, and made one arrest. There was one fatal accident, and four injury and 10 non-injury accidents. Mr Gilshnan said that the figures were consistent for the two nights and, even though extra staff were working, the number of drivers stopped for drinking and driving was reasonably high. “It appears they are going back to their old habits,” he said. a
