Motor-cyclist dies in fall
A youth, aged 14, was killed in Christchurch on Saturday evening when he fell from a motor-cycle soon after overtaking a car. He was Leo Tauhe West, of 9 Glade Avenue, Avonside. He was riding west along River Road at 9.15 p.m. when he overtook a car. “About 50 yards further along he somersaulted off his bike on to the road and was killed instantly,” a police spokesman said. The motor-cyclist was wearing a helmet. No-one else was involved in the accident. A teacher was killed in an accident on the StratfordOpunake highway at 3.20 p.m. on Saturday. She was Caroline Meyrick’ D’Arcy, aged 23, of Henderson. Miss D’Arcy was the driver and sole occupant of a car which failed to take a short curve on the road. A man died when struck by a car on Great South Road, Papakura, about 10.30
p.m. on Saturday, the Press Association reported. He was Desmond Patrick Queenin, aged 43, a clerk, of Pukekohe. A woman was killed and another trapped in the wreckage of a small car for more than an hour after a two-car collision in Auckland on Friday evening. The woman who died was a passenger in one of the cars. She was Margaret Stella Elizabeth Whyte, aged 66, of Pakuranga. The driver, Anne Marie Bates, also of Pakuranga, was reported in a critical condition in hospital at the week-end. A Palmerston North nurse died and two travelling companions are in hospital after a road accident near Hunterville yesterday. She was Tania Liane Hardy, aged 21. She died when the utility in which she was travelling went out of control and crashed into a tree.
