10m fishing boat sinks

Two members of the crew of the fishing boat Desiree were rescued from their liferaft off Banks Peninsula yesterday afternoon after their vessel overturned and sank in calm conditions. The 10m boat was returning to Akaroa about 3 p.m. with a cargo of 60 crates of fish when the load suddenly shifted and capsized the Desiree, the Christchurch police said. The Desiree sank in about 35m of water two kilometres off Goughs Bay on the eastern tip of Banks Peninsula. A flare fired from the liferaft was spotted by the fishing vessel Astro-Corina, and the two members of the Desiree’s crew, the skipper, Mr Noel Hopkins, and Ms‘ Suzanne Stewart, were rescued and taken to Akaroa. They arrived about 9 p.m. No-one was injured.
