Another baby by test-tube
PA Auckland A third woman on the test-tube baby programme at the National Women’s Hospital is now expecting a child. The woman is eight weeks pregnant, according to a member of the in-vitro fertilisation team, Dr F. Graham. The first two women to become pregnant through the technique were progressing well, 18 weeks through their term, he said on Saturday. The latest pregnancy continues the phenomenal success of the team, which achieved its first pregnancy only two months after the first, embryo was transferred.
It is believed to be the
quickest breakthrough of any test-tube team in the world. Most teams overseas have waited up to two years for their first pregnancy. When the first pregnancies were announced just before Christmas last year, the Infertility Research Trust was set up to take contributions for the work. Dr Graham said the response from the public had been disappointing. . Only $6OO had so far come in, and more than $12,000 was needed to buy essential equipment, which the team now had to borrow from other departments. Dr Graham said he hoped that contributions would pick up after the holidays.
