Struggle to recover body
Searchers recovering the body of a member of the Special Air Service lost on Mount Rolleston in the Arthur’s Pass National Park had to battle snow and rain before they got the body off the mountain on Saturday. Corporal Robin Ngaira, aged 26, of Papakura, Auckland, disappeared after falling down a 300 m ravine in treacherous conditions on the east face of Mount Rolleston on Wednesday afternoon. His body was discovered about 12.40 p.m. on Saturday. It took the rescuers five hours to bring the body off the mountain. Constable Jeremy Rivett, the search co-ordinator, said that light snow, hail, and rain added to the difficulty of recovering the body. The body was discovered not far from the waterfall where Constable Ngaira fell. His body was brought by helicopter to Arthur’s Pass and later to Christchurch.
