South Island-trained winners were not thick on the ground at this year's Wellington Cup carnival. But there was something for southerners to savour in the last of the 27 contests. Notusho, from Richmond, and McAngus, from Gore, were the only two South Island-trained ' runners in the Kelburn Handicap, the final event and third leg of the T.A.B. treble on Saturday, and they landed the quinella. Notusho. running for John Healey’s stable in the colours of Mr and Mrs Henry Houston, finished at a great rate through the middle, and got up to beat McAngus by a long neck. ' A four-year-old gelding by Beaufort Sea, the most successful Canterbury-based stallion, Notusho finished third in the Douro Cup, his only previous race at the meeting. He was given a chance to show his prowess at Trentham after two successive wins on South Island courses, one of them at Reefton. Notusho was ridden on Saturday by David Walsh, who had his worries when the four-year-old became positioned well down the field on the inner early. They were still several lengths from the leaders 400 m out, but when the gaps came Notusho changed tne complexion of the race with a brilliant late surge.
