Poor batting by Canty
Canterbury collapsed against the pace bowling of Richard Webb to suffer a decisive first-innings defeat in the rain-ruined Shell Trophy cricket match against Otago at Dunedin on Saturday. With Webb enjoying the impressive analysis of six for 20, Canterbury was out for only 82 in 38 overs. Otago's first innings had ended earlier in the day at 210, the young opening batsman, Ken Rutherford, contributing a fine 93.
It was Rutherford who assisted in Canterbury’s batting embarrassment, too, as he accepted sizzling catches in the gully to dismiss Peter Rattray and Vaughan Brown. Rattray, David Stead and Ash Hart were the only Canterbury batsmen to reach double figures.
Webb had an able lieutenant in Neil Mallender, who took two inexpensive wickets, and Canterbury’s problems were compounded when Dayle Hadlee was not able to bat because of illness. Otago now has 24 trophy points from five matches, and Canterbury’s total stays at 32 after four games. Wellington still leads the series with 40 points, also from four matches. OTAGO First innings K.
