Four-stroke lead by golf team

PA Dunedin The University of Oklahoma golf team opened up a fourstroke lead over New Zealand after the first round of the 54hole international contest on the Chisholm Park links yesterday.

Strong north-easterly winds and hard fairways made scoring difficult and only Gary Radka (New Zealand) and Grant Waite (Oklahoma) managed to break par with one under 70s.

Greg Turner (Oklahoma) and Brent Paterson (New Zealand) finished one over par on 72 while New Zealand's lefthanded professional, Bob Charles, scored 73.

The lowest six scores from the ,'pine-strong Oklahoma team/gave a total of 439 - an

average of almost 73.2 strokes a player. The only consolation for local supporters was that the lowest two Oklahoma rounds were scored by former New Zealand representatives.

Results of the first round (lowest six scores count towards team totals):— Oklohoma 439: Grant Waite 70, Greg Turner 72, Todd Hamilton 73, Andrew Magee 74, Mark Weibel 74, Cliff Pierce 76, Phillip Aickin 76, Todd Mavis 78, Jim Begwin 79.
