Economic survey result ‘a disaster’

PA Wellington A survey of international industrial competitiveness which put New Zealand eighteenth out of 22 nations was another indictment of the Government’s handling of the economy, said

Labour’s finance spokesman, Mr R. O. Douglas, yesterday. The result of the survey by the European Management Forum was a disaster, said Mr Douglas. He said that if political stability and natural resource endowments had been left out of the survey New Zealand would have performed even more poorly. Only Spain, Turkey, Greece, and Portugal performed worse than New Zealand. Japan came first and Switzerland second. “It is pitiful that New Zealand is down there with the sick economies,” said Mr Douglas. “It is likely that only our high marks for socio-politi-cal consensus and stability, compared to unstable nations such as Turkey and Greece, kept us from performing even more poorly.”
