Hagley road run series
A series of five skm road running races will be held on a sealed course in North Hagley Park, Christchurch, for six weeks from January 24.
The race series, called the Lion Brown-St Martins skm series, will be open to both registered and unregistered runners, with unregistered runners starting at 6 p.m. and registered runners at 6.45 p.m. The course will comprise three laps of a sealed circuit in North Hagley Park, with the direction set by the organisers before each race to give the best wind advantage to competitors.
The St Martins Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club is organising the races and hopes to make them an annual series. Proceeds will go towards new club facilities in Hansen Park, Opawa, and to the promotion of the sport in the club. Peter Watts, a leading Canterbury veteran runner, put the idea to his club because he felt that there were too few shorter road races on the summer running calendar. “I felt we should try to give running more of a push, and skm is a distance that most should be able to handle,” he said.
The first 10 men and women in both the registered and unregistered races will receive certificates and will be awarded points which will accumulate to make them eligible for series prizes.
The races will be'held on January 24 and 31, and February 7, 21 and 28. The entry of $1 per race will be accepted at the start from 5.30 p.m. each race day. All runners will be eligible for spot prizes. Times will be called at the finish.
