Wildlife poaching charges laid
PA Auckland A number of charges against companies relating to a multi-million dollar poaching industry were filed in the District Court at Auckland yesterday, by Wildlife Service Officers. The number and details of the charges were not available, but the first hearings will take place in court on January 31.
Several thousand dollars worth of trout and birds, mainly waterfowl, were seized. The Conservator of Wildlife at Rotorua, Mr David Stack, would not reveal the names or the number of companies involved, nor the towns in which they operated, until he had had confirmation that the summonses had been received. The summonses came after a three-month investigation by the Wildlife Service’s law-enforcement unit, based at Rotorua.
Mr Stack said the operation was continuing and more summonses were likely.
