Labour given for waterfront gym

The Lyttelton Harbour Board has given $l2OO of materials and labour towards the building of a gymasium for use by all Lyttelton waterfront workers. The chairman of the board, Mr G. E. Wright, said that the board would make labour available during “non-peak demand.” The idea for the gymnasium arose from a series of industrial keep-fit programmes organised by the occupational health nurse at Lyttelton, Sister Vesta Boswell, and the Christchurch Polytechnic. The keep-fit programme was set up a year ago, since when about 70 waterfront workers have taken part. The programme covered

strength, mobility, general fitness, and cardio-vascular fitness.

The board also gave $475 to the Lyttelton branch of the St John Ambulance Association to buy a personal pager. The tele-pager system, distributed by the New Zealand Post Office is a small pocket-sized receiver that can be activated through a telephone call.

The donation will allow the association to buy its fifth pager. Other pagers have been brought with donations from local businesses.

The senior station master, Mr P. Dawson, said the system would mean a better and quicker call-out service for Lyttelton people.
