Wessels hits 179
NZPA-AAP Adelaide A magnificent 179 by the South African-born opener. Kepler Wessels, has put Australia in a dominant position after the first day of the third cricket test against Pakistan at Adelaide Oval, yesterday. At stumps, Australia was five wickets down for 376, with Allan Border unbeaten on 76. Wessells, who was dropped after scoring only seven, went on to slam 23 fours and one six. The innings bettered his 162 in his test debut for Australia in Brisbane last season against England, and was his third
century in eight tests. He was dismissed 30 minutes before stumps, caught off a hot square cut by Pakistan's captain, Zaheer Abbas, from Abdul Qadir’s bowling. With Graham Yallop, Wessels put on 142 for the second wicket before Yallop was dismissed for 68. Wessels also teamed with Allan Border in a fourth-wicket partnership of 134. The Pakistan bowlers were let down by sloppy fielding, and Yallop was dropped by Salim Malik before scoring. Australia won the toss and its skipper, Kim Hughes, had no in opting tq.bat
