Defection ‘a relief’

PA Wellington The Social Credit leader, Mr Bruce Beetham, said yesterday that one of two defections from Social Credit to the New Zealand Party had left “to great relief” and “long before the Bob Jones party was established.”

Mr Jones named on Thursday two former Social Credit members in Matamata and Kapiti whom he said had defected to the New Zealand Party.

A Matamata businessman, Mr John Doel, who stood for Social Credit in Rotorua in the 1981 election,

would seek the New Zealand Party nomination for Matamata next year. The president of the Kapiti Social Credit electorate, Mr D. Eddowes, had also left to join the New Zealand Party.

Mr Eddowes said that he had reluctantly resigned after evaluating the manifestos of the two parties. Mr Beetham said that Mr Doel “had left Social Credit to the party’s great relief long before the Bob Jones party' was established.” He did not comment on Mr Eddowes’ defection.
