Canada in front

NZPA-Reuter Jakarta

Canada seized a twostroke lead over the United States as Dave Barr fired a six-under-par 66 in the opening round of the 30th World Cup golf championship, at the Pondok Indah Club course.

Barr’s outstanding performance was backed by a level-par 72 from Jerry Anderson as the Canadians set a target of 138 which their more favoured rivals could not match. New Zealand started poorly with a total of 156, Dennis Clark hitting 73 and Stuart Reese, 83. The United States which has won 15 of the 29 previous world cups, finished the day on 140 with a three-under-par 69 from Rex Caldwell and a 71 from John Cook.

Italy, third last year in Acapulco, Mexico, was third on 142, after a five-birdie 67 from Silvano Locatelli. Massimo Manelli contributed a 75 as the Italians went one shot in front of title-holders, Spain, for whom Manuel Pinero and Jose Canizares shot 70 and 73 respectively.
