Rain delights
South Africans have greeted with delight this week’s torrential rainstorms that have lifted the threat of widespread water rationing, but the Government said restrictions on water use would remain in force. The drought affected most of southern Africa, sending the country deeper into recession and causing severe hardship and misery to poor blacks, particularly in rural areas. Municipalities . imposed water-saving measures ranging from a ban on watering gardens or washing cars with hoses to a prohibition on refilling empty swimming pools. — Johannesburg.
