$2M yacht series for Sydney
NZPA-AAP Sydney Dates have been set and courses worked out for a $2.1 million “Australia’s Cup” to be held on Sydney Harbour next summer for the world’s fastest mono-hulled boats, the 18-foot skiffs. The promoter, Mr Michael Edgley, is negotiating with a sponsor for the event, to be held in December, 1984, and promoted world wide as a sailing and spectator event. A promotions consultant coordinating the “Australia’s Cup,” Mr Geoff Stewart, said
the first prize would be a valuable trophy plus $700,000 cash.
Mr Stewart said responses to the promotion indicated about 50 skiffs from Australia, the United States, New Zealand, Italy, France, and the Netherlands would compete, and promoters would be visiting all these countries next year to finalise arrangements. The designer of Australia 11, Mr Ben Lexcen, has been approached and Mr Stewart said he had “agreed in principle to endorse the event and be personally involved.”
