Black Arrow shaping up for Trentham
By
J. J. BOYLE
Black Arrow, impressive winner of the Kenyon Promotions Handicap in his race debut at Riccarton yesterday, will probably race at Trentham next month if he pleases his connections in the meantime.
“He cost over $20,000 and we willbe looking at races with big stakes in an effort to recover that outlay,” Ron McCann said after he rode Black Arrow to an easy win yesterday. McCann trains Black Ar-
row in partnership with Pam Robson for Mrs Mary Sutherland, who purchased the Licorice Stick colt at a Waikato sale in September. He was the very last colt sold out of that catalogue but his purchase price was still twice the sale average. Ron McCann believes Black Arrow is capable of improving with racing and further experience. “He doesn’t do any more than he has to,” McCann said after Black Arrow won yesterday.
Black Arrow had only one challenger, Natural Star. But after a brief struggle Black Arrow found superior finishing powers and kicked away to beat Natural Star by two lengths and a quarter.
The others struggled in vain to stay in touch. Adios King, third, was in a gap of six lengths. The favourite, Kiss Me Kate, was never a real contender, although she made some headway for fifth.
