Queen’s Pal wins untested
By
J. J. BOYLE
Queen’s Pal, in her first start from a Canterbury stable, went close to humbling her sprint rivals in the Aitken Handicap, second leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double yesterday.
She has been trained for all her racing by Tony Prendergast, who, with his and life partner Lyn, moved from Wingatui to take over a stable at West Melton about three weeks ago.
Tony Prendergast could have regarded Queen’s Pal’s win yesterday as a good omen. “She’s the first to go through the gate at West Melton for a race,” Tony
Prendergast said after the star of his team won untested by two lengths yesterday. This was Queen’s Pal’s twelfth win from 23 starts for her Green Island breeder, Mrs Florrie Griffin.
Last season’s top three-year-old filly, Queen’s Pal will now be pointed for feature southern holiday races, including the James Hazlett Gold Cup at Wingatui.
The third of the stock of the Riccarton Stud stallion Palatable to win yesterday, Queen’s Pai had an easy time for a week or so after the New Zealand Cup meeting, but when Russell McAra called on her for
something extra yesterday she charged through gaps as if she had only joined in. Strange Magic had passed Astral Row and Dainty Dish to reach the front and kept battling bravely after being mastered by the favourite to save second by a length from Sporting Show. Paddy Beaufort, one of the veterans of the field, improved several positions for fourth close behind Sporting Show. Upper Cut, fifth, was an even faster finisher; he had been one of the slowest beginners. Miles Better, at 10 years the oldest runner at the meeting, showed sprightly qualities by finishing sixth in this, his first start for the season.
