Women’s refuge
Christchurch Women’s Refuge marked its tenth year of providing help and temporary homes to women and children in violent situations by holding a Christmas party to which colleagues in the helping professions were invited. Guests included members of the police, lawyers, social agencies, doctors and public servants.
Mrs Barbara Milner, a founding member, told guests that the refuge col-
lective could not have managed without their support. She drew particular attention to the part played by the Christchurch City Council, which has been described at Natioal Women’s Refuge conferences as “the most supportive in New Zealand.”
“The council’s housing officers have never rubbished us, and we feel very comfortable with them,” she said.
