Dogs in hotel bar lead to arrest
Fines of $175 were imposed in the District Court yesterday on a man earlier convicted of , a charge of being a quarrelsome person on licensed premises, and resisting a police officer. Abraham Edmonds, aged 39, admitted the offences which took place after he walked into a New Brighton tavern with two large dogs on Show Day. Edmonds took the dogs inside but was refused service until they were removed. He complied but after being served he brought the/dogs back in and secured them to his table. He refused a second request to take them out. The police were called, and in the ensuing struggle tables were overturned and
glasses smashed. The dogs were encouraged to join in and one bit a policeman. In the moving patrol car Edmonds struggled violently and jumped out, dragging a policeman with him. Defence counsel said the pressure of domestic problems was responsible for his client’s drinking. He added that patrons in the hotel had actively encouraged him to take the dogs into the hotel. Judge Hattaway fined the defendant $75 on the quarrelling charge and $lOO on the resisting offence.
