Man presumed drowned
Ashburton reporter The Mayfield man swept into the sea near the Rangitata rivermouth on Wednesday morning is now presumed to have drowned. Brewer Kennaird Scott, a farmer, aged 56, was last seen 100 metres offshore after he was swept from the shingle beach while fishing. A coastal search is being maintained by the police and other persons. The police had decided not to make any more aerial sweeps of the area, but friends and relatives of Mr Scott might use a plane to search the area, said Senior-Sergeant W. J. Porter.
