Aust. shares up again
NZPA Sydney ; Share prices finished strongly in moderate trading on Australian sharemarkets yesterday, with selective buying of resource stocks and consumer-related industrial issues. Near the close, the all-ordin-aries index, was 5.6 points higher at 705.9, the all-industri-als index ’was seven points firmer at 898.4, and the allresources index was 4.5 points up at. 552.3. ' Rises outnumbered falls five to three. Turnover totalled sAust3l.33 million, including $3.28M in offmarket business. Brokers attributed the rally in the industrial sector to downward movements in interest rates and inflation. The recent lift in mining stocks was put down to earlier overselling out a sustained improvement is not expected until base-metal prices rise. . Most heavy-weight miners added a few cents yesterday. Peko Wallsend advanced 10c to 630 and EZlndustries gained 4c to 580 in Sydney and jumped 20c to 590 in Melbourne. BHP rose 5c to 1275, CSR climbed 8c to 380, CRA gained 4c to 576, MIM inched up 2c to 380, and Bougainville Copper and North Broken Hill firmed 3c to 238 and 338 respectively. Among gold stocks, GMK climbed 20c to 880, Central Norseman put on 10c to 600 and Pancontinental Mining eased 2c to 130. Oil and gas stocks joined the general market advance. Santos rose' 8c to 814, Ampol Exploration gained 15c to 355, and Hartogen and Bridge added 10c each to 250 and 320 respectively.
