Handy hints

When a good quality concrete floor finish is desired, employ a machine float for finishing in preference to a plastered topping. Adequate curing of concrete or of externa plaster is just as important as the provision of good quality materials. Correct curing reduces the risk of cracking. Don’t try to plaster a surface which is coated with a bituminous solution unless a good clean, dry, sharp sand has been applied to the tacky bitumen in a similar manner to that of a dash coat on Crete.

Don’t try to plaster over on stains on concrete as there are now detergents available to remove them successfully. To stop a 'table rocking put a screw in the bottom of the short leg just far enough to stabilise the table. Bind sticky tape round the bottom of the leg until it is level with the head of the screw. Fill the space with plastic wood (smearing a little over the screwhead) and allow to set. This will prevent the screw scratching the floor. Strip off the tape when the plastic wood has set hard.
